Captain Lance McGavin’s journey as a military dentist began in July 2015 when he commissioned into the United States Air Force in Salt Lake City, Utah. Four years later, in 2019, he completed his commissioned officer training at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama, solidifying his leadership skills and preparing for the responsibilities ahead. He then pursued advanced training, completing a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, Illinois. This intensive program further honed his clinical skills, setting the stage for the next chapter of his military career.

In 2020, Dr. McGavin was transferred to Patrick Air Force Base in Florida. Shortly after his arrival, history was made when Vice President Mike Pence officially renamed the installation to Patrick Space Force Base, making it the first base of the newly formed U.S. Space Force. During his time at Patrick SFB, Dr. McGavin provided dental care for the personnel responsible for space flight operations for the United States Government. One of the most memorable moments of his service was witnessing the SpaceX Crew-1 mission launch in November 2020 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Over the course of his tenure, he witnessed nearly 200 additional space launches, many of which he observed while treating patients at the Patrick SFB dental clinic.

Beyond his clinical duties, Dr. McGavin participated in high-level training exercises, including flights on the HC-130J Combat King and Sikorsky HH-60 Pave Hawk. His dedication and expertise earned him recognition as the 2022 Clinical Dentist of the Year for the United States Space Force. As one of only three dentists supporting the mission at Patrick SFB, he played a crucial role in maintaining the health and readiness of service members, even stepping up as interim flight commander when needed.

After an accomplished military career, Dr. McGavin transitioned to private practice, using his extensive experience to build his own dental office, White Palm Dental. Choosing to make Melbourne, Florida—just 20 minutes from Patrick Space Force Base—his permanent home, he opened White Palm Dental on December 2, 2024. Now, he continues his commitment to excellence, bringing the same high level of care he provided in the military to his civilian patients. His journey highlights the incredible opportunities available through the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). For those interested in serving their country, gaining unparalleled experience, and becoming a highly skilled dentist, Dr. McGavin’s story serves as an inspiring testament to what’s possible through military service.
